Microsoft is suing homebuilders for offering "Windows" in their homes. Instead, they need to refer to them as "transparent viewing portals".

Where were you when Apple sued NYC for using "Big Apple" in its travel brochure? Apple is being a dick in this case.

If Apple can show a version of Aperture which will run smoothly on a Mac Pro, then my two grand is practically theirs already...

An iCamera (CameraPro?) of some kind would be nice, though highly unlikely.

so do I, because I bought a game thinking it would work with my 5th generation ipod and it doesn't :(

Make sure your iPod got updated to software revision 1.2, and that you're using iTunes 7.0.

Use a GPS device in your car? Can be tracked.

    Is this true?

I though that an in car GPS just receives the signals from the satellites and works out your position. How can that be tracked?

Well I will openly admit that I have a low opinion of those who get burned in investment scams. If you're stupid enough to think you're going to get the kind of returns promised to you by the likes of Madoff, then you deserve to lose your money. But that's off topic.

    -Don

No, I think it is right on target. Because, it shows your attitude in life. Your mom or you cause an accident on purpose, to teach a valid lesson (as you put it), but the other person is to blame for not being courteous. Someone scams people out of money, but it is the victims' fault for being stupid.

It clearly shows that you think that if you are strong enough or smart enough that you are entitled to take whatever you can without thought to legality or what is morally right or wrong.

I find it sad, that at 16 you are morally and ethically bankrupt.

this moel apple is using is fine, but 2 things need to happen, 1, much teh same as netflix, they should send you a blank dvd with case for each order, and secondly, like the music, all cover art should be given as well. it should be burnable, I would pay 9.99 for movie with the convinience of download, for this proce, even with the less quality if I could burn my own dvd, put it in any dvd player and watch it. but I want all teh artwork as well, so i can FEEL my dvd library growing,
    andreas
Why not just buy the DVD and save yourself the bandwidth and burn time?

Oh ok... :) you might need sarcasm tags.

Does anyone know if it is still possible to start a new wireless plan without a contract? I mean, the whole idea of the contract is to cover the phone subsidy, but if I don't want a new phone do I still have to get one?

I've been considering switching to Cingular since I don't get any signal at all in my workplace with T-Mobile (the higher GSM frequency has trouble going through thick walls) but Cingular works great.

I haven't been on a contract in about 5 years now, and I don't want to get back on one again, which is part of the reason I've stayed with T-Mobile.
There may be some plans out there that you can start up without a contract, but the problem with carriers now days is that they're slowly phasing out 0-month term contracts, they still exist, but it can be hard to find, when I was working with an evil US based CDMA carrier a year ago, there was only one plan offered that you could purchase without a contract. You can always call up Cingular customer service and ask them yourselves (for comparisons) if you want, that's what they are there for (but watch out, they'll be greedy and try to sign you up then and there, to make their commission).

Here in Canada, with the "only" GSM carrier we have (you Canucks know it's only 1 in reality!) only allows the use of plans with a contract, usually in increments of 2 or 3 years (even 1 year contracts are starting to get hard to get). Not fun.

Agreed-UK is next to get TV shows-perhaps BBC will offer its shows.

It had better do. The British public (those who pay license, which like 99% do) has the legal right to every single piece of footage, news story, radio recording etc. etc. the BBC has ever produced, but we have access to about 1% of it.

It's a big point of controversy here. Partly it's been due to technology limitations, but pretty soon there'll be no excuse, and the BBC should be right off the bat finding new ways to deliver what belongs to us.

Office and Windows are/were generic words OUTSIDE of the computer industry (like Apple). But app(lication) store is a generic word INSIDE of the computer industry and that the big legal difference here.

Like I just said.... Mac's had windows (and they called them that) before PC's had "Windows". Mac OS has used windows and trash and all that drag-and-drop and double-click-a-file goodness long before any DOS PC had it. Xerox invented it, sold it to Apple, and Apple used it in the Mac.

"Windows" was a generic term in the computer industry before Microsoft had any trademark.

EDIT: I still think neither should be allowed, but given the precedents out there I would give Apple the "App Store" trademark. Certainly MS is the pot calling the kettle black here. Considering their windows-based operating system is called "Windows" and their Office productivity suite is called "Office". These guys should all have to come up with better names for their stuff if they want a trademark. Like.... why not just stick an "i" in front of it? iApp Store (see how easy that was).

I wouldn't go so far as to kill someone. If I killed them, how could they learn a lesson?

    -Don

You won't be intending to kill someone, but if you get in an accident at or above freeway speeds, you or someone else will be killed wether you are trying to kill them or not, and even if you game the system to get off of any charges you will still have to live with the fact that you killed someone.

Have some new tech that you'd like to share with us?

Yeah, SSDs. I'm so over hard drives.

I'm not buying another Mac anytime soon. I'm gonna wait for SSDs to get cheaper and bigger before I commit to any new hardware.

seriously did you not watch the video?
mobile phone providers collect location data themselves from all phone automatically, this information is separately collected away from the mobile networks and is not (as we know) not given to the networks (and apple don't even collect it) and only stored locally.

agreed - and I don't care if it stored locally on my phone .... I'm just wondering why it is stored anyway? If it is hidden from the user, nobody else can access it ... that why is it stored? I for sure will use it from now on as a feature and revisit my many trips. Does anyone know since when this is really stored - is it worth getting my old iPhone 3G backups from TimeMachine and check them out?

I haven't seen if this is an exclusive license or not. If Apple got an exclusive license from Creative we could see some interesting times ahead for other MP3 player makers.

It's not...the press release says that Apple can recoup some of the money if Creative is able to license the patent to other companies.

Apple's entry into the living room is way overdue (the mini only barely counts since it doesn't have real media center/pvr capabilities). I've been waiting for 2 years for them to do with the living room what they have done with the MP3 player.

I can't think of a better combo than a 23" iMac in my office wirelessly linked to a media-box in my living room that will allow me to record and watch TV, stream downloaded movies from my PC to my TV, stream my iTunes library to my stereo, and show my iPhotos without a second computer.

If Apple wins this argument, obviously that would prevent MS from calling theirs the "App Store" - but can they still use the phrase descriptively? I.e. "Welcome to App Market, Microsoft's app store."

If they can't (and Microsoft, Google, Blackberry etc. all trademark the others, App Shop, App Market etc.), then how do you describe what the App Store/App Shop is? I can't think of a more generic variant which could be used to describe it. "Windows" is an OS. "Internet Explorer" is a browser. "Office" is an application suite. "App Store" is...errr... an app store.

I don't usually speculate, but I find it interesting "Showtime" is capitalized. Could the downloads be part of some partnership with the cable channel? Just wild speculation on my part.

So, did you even READ what Rogue Amoeba had to say?

I'm seriously amazed with you apologists. You guys are defending Apple in an instance where they are CLEARLY in the wrong.

    w00master

Please be more specific when you say "wrong", in what way?

Apple owns the rights to their intellectual property, this includes images and icons of their products that they have created.

However, let me be clear here... I think Apple's "stance" regarding this is "wrong". Rogue Amoeba has enriched the user experience by providing an accurate representation of the source. This should have been resolved when Apple looked into it on more than the surface level.

It makes sense. iProducts are increasingly becoming ubiquitous, therefore they will become more profitable for malware developers to attack. It's not a McAfee sales pitch so much as it's stating the obvious. Same with Android.

    Sad, but true :(

(And I don't feel the need to argue or debate or say more in this thread to justify this obvious fact.)

As the MacBook Pro is wider, it will get very light magnets at either end of the displays too, to hold it neatly shut.

one of the best predictions i have heard to date...

New iMacs and Mac Minis imo. Those don't require anything changed apart from a processor swap since they're socketed. I'd give the Macbook Pros and MacBooks a while longer before we see an update.

Edit: If they don't up the quality of the movies to the base HD spec of 720p then they may as well not bother. I'd rather go and buy the DVDs. The only way I'd be tempted to purchase via iTunes would be if the quality I could get would be higher. I don't care if it takes a while to download.

Hey the Cingular deal is only six months exclusive, like the RAZR was. So you can all get it probably many more places afterwards and all of the bugs will be worked out by then.. I use Cingular and LOVE it due to the coverage in San Francisco which is difficult due to the seven hills. May other carriers I tried before including verizon and t mobile were much worse here.

Buy I have an 80GB iPod with 18,ooo songs so this thing will me useless to me. But it sure sounds cool!!

Don't pretend you actually care about 'open'. To you, 'open' simply means 'free'. I'm going to make a stab in the dark and make the logical assumption that all your '720p and 1080p media' is torrented videos. Please, correct me if I'm wrong

To me, it just sounds like yet another person wanting everything but willing to pay nothing. What a sustainable model that is...

Nah, I really don't care about open. No, I do not Torrent.
I just want the technology available without having to buy more junk. I prefer the "one piece of hardware that does it all" approach. :p
